- Constancy is the idea that we see a particular object in the size, color, shape, and other senses that we expect.
- An unchanging quality or characteristic of a person or thing.
- The best example is our Indian tradition.
Perceptual Constancy:
- It is also called as Subjective Constancy.
- People tend to perceive objects constant and unchanging despite changes in perspective, lighting, shape, or color.
- If we look any object from different conditions it looks different. But, it has its own parameters like shape, color, size.
Different types of Perceptual Constancies:
Size Constancy:
- The size of objects is perceived to be constant, even though a change in distance makes objects appear smaller or larger.
- For example, A book will seems smaller from far away, larger from close up, but it still the same book.
- The brightness of the objects is perceived to be constant, even though changes in illumination make the objects appear brighter or darker.
- For example, A book on a lighted desk is same as the one in dark room.
- The shape of object is perceived to be constant, even thought changes in perspective makes the objects appear to have different shapes.
- For example, A book will have the same shape regardless of the angle it is viewed from.
