Aliasing and Anti-aliasing

Aliasing:
  • Aliasing is a jagged, or stair-step effect (also known as jaggies) on curved or diagonal lines.
  • In sound, it produces the distortion or buzz.

Effects of Aliasing:
The errors caused by aliasing are called artifacts. The common artifacts are:
  • Jagged Profiles
  • Loss of Details
  • Disintegrating Textures
Anti-aliasing:
  • Anti aliasing is the smoothing of the image or sound roughness caused by aliasing.
  • It reduces the aliasing effects.

  • With images, approaches include adjusting pixel positions or setting pixel intensities so that there is a more gradual transition between the color of a line and the background color.
